Three shops gutted in Khulna fire

At least three watch shop and godowns were gutted in a fire that broke out in KD Ghosh road area of the city Tuesday.

The fire originated from an electric short-circuit at Bashir watch shop in Ambasador building, a posh residential hotel in Helatola intersection area on KD Ghosh road under Sadar Police Station of the city and soon engulfed the adjacent two watch godowns around 3.30 am, police and Fire Service and Civil Defence sources said.

Assistant Director of Khulna Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Faruk Hossain Shikder said, on information, eight firefighting units from Khulna rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after four hour of frantic efforts with the help of locals.

“The firefighters rescued at least 20 borders of the high-rise residential hotel through ladder as lift was shut then,” he said, adding that one watch shop and two watch godowns were totally damaged in the incident.

Md Bashir Khan, owner of a watch shop and godowns, told BSS that huge watches worth about over two crore were fully damaged in the fire.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khulna Sadar Police Station Hasan Al Mamun told BSS that all shops were shut due to Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja festival in the busiest Helatola intersection adjacent to Borobazar, today.
