Foreign Airlines Flights at Sylhet Airport After Eight Years

After eight years, a regular international flight of a foreign airline has landed at Sylhet’s Osmani International Airport again. The long break in regular flights by foreign airlines ended with the landing of Oman’s SalamAir‘s Muscat-Sylhet flight on Tuesday (September 1) morning.

Confirming the matter, Sylhet Airport Manager Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that SalamAir‘s Muscat-Sylhet flight with 133 passengers landed at Osmani International Airport at 7:55 am. After the passenger formalities, the same aircraft with 224 passengers left Sylhet for Muscat at 9:23 am.

SalamAir organized a cake cutting and discussion meeting at the airport’s VIP lounge to mark the resumption of foreign airline flights.

Oman’s Deputy Ambassador to Dhaka Fateha Ahmed Al Balushi, SalamAir Chief Commercial Officer Steven Allen, Bangladesh Managing Director MA Latif Shahriar Zahidi and Sylhet Airport Manager Hafiz Uddin Ahmed were present. The event was hosted by SalamAir’s Sylhet Area Manager Salim Al Razi.

The history of foreign airlines operating flights at Sylhet Osmani International Airport is not new. On April 1, 2015, Dubai-based Flydubai was the first foreign airline to launch international flights here. However, they stopped their flights to Sylhet in September 2018.

Since then, no foreign airline has operated regular international flights from Osmani International Airport. As a result, despite it being an international airport, there was a void in the regular flights of foreign airlines for a long time.

That void was filled with the launch of SalamAir‘s flights. The launch of direct flights with Muscat has created an opportunity for Sylhet passengers to travel directly to one of the most important destinations in the Middle East.

According to SalamAir‘s plan, direct flights will initially be operated three days a week on the Muscat-Sylhet route. There are plans to increase the number of flights to five days a week next month. After that, the airline plans to operate flights on this route seven days a week from January 2027.

According to relevant sources, after SalamAir, several other foreign airlines including Air Arabia and FlyDubai may launch direct flights from Osmani International Airport by December this year.
