Biker breaches PM’s security cordon

Police have taken a motorcyclist into custody for trying to enter the security cordon set up for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who was attending an event in the city’s Farmgate area.

The incident took place around 4pm on Saturday, shortly after the prime minister entered the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium, said Tejgaon Police Station chief Md Moniruzzaman.

The prime minister was in attendance at the event, which was organised to mark the 48th founding anniversary of the BNP.

“Police were deployed at the Khamarbari intersection,” Moniruzzaman said. “Due to the prime minister’s arrival at the event venue and the large crowd, the left lane of the road from Khamarbari intersection to Farmgate was closed. However, traffic was moving normally on the right lane, the one headed to Farmgate.”

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s motorcade arrived at the venue from his office via the Bijoy Sarani and Urojahaj crossings.

Immediately after the prime minister’s motorcade entered, the biker tried to enter the left lane from the intersection. The traffic sergeant on duty stopped him and handed him over to the police.

Later, Tejgaon police took the young man and his motorcycle into custody. However, police official Moniruzzaman could not immediately provide details of his name and identity.

He also said, “The young man told us that he did not know about the closure of the left lane.”
The police have already checked the young man’s previous criminal record, but he also said that no suspicious information was found.

Despite this, Moniruzzaman said that a “further decision” would be taken on the matter after questioning and verification of information.
