Bangladesh Women earn bronze in Asiad Cricket

Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team earned bronze medal in the Cricket Competition of the 19th Asian Games defeating Pakistan Women’s Cricket team by five wickets at Hangzhou in China on Monday.

It is the first medal for Bangladesh in the ongoing Hangzhou Asian Games.

Sent into bat first, Pakistan scored 64 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.

In reply, Bangladesh sailed home making 65 for the loss of five wickets when they had 10 balls to spare.

Bangladesh had a satisfactory start as the two openers Shamima Sultana and Sathi Rani put on together 27 runs before Shamima Sultana was dismissed by Sadia Iqbal.

Shamima Sultana made 13 runs from 17 deliveries including two fours.

After dismissal of Shamima, Sathi Rani could stay at the crease for a short period as she was dismissed by Nashra Sandhu when the Tigresses’ total was 30 for the loss of two wickets.

Sathi Rani scored 13 using 19 balls with two fours.

Shorna Akter remained unbeaten with 14 runs. She hit the team’s highest of 14 runs playing 33 deliveries.

She played the key role to reach the winning target.

Ritu Moni added seven runs to the Bangladesh’s total.

Nashra Sandhu grabbed three wickets at the cost of 10 runs, while Nida Dar and Sadia Iqbal took one wicket each for six and 16 runs respectively.

Earlier, Alia Riaz, Nida Dar, Sadaf Shams and Natalia Pervaiz fought back against the tight bowling attack of Bangladesh scoring 17, 14, 13 and 11 runs respectively.

Shorna Akter claimed three wickets in the space of 16 runs, while Sanjida Akter bagged two wickets instead of 11 runs.

Marufa Akter, Rabeya Khan and Nahida Akter took one wicket each for two, 14 and 15 runs respectively.

After the match, Secretary General of Bangladesh Olympic Association Syed Shahed Reza, Chef de Mission of Bangladesh Contingent AK Sarkar congratulated Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team for their success in 19th Asian Games.

Earlier, Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team clinched silver medal in 2010 Asian Games and bagged bronze medal in 2014 Asian Games.
