Giving shelter to sacked DAG in US embassy was unjustified: SCBA
Staff Reporter :
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Md Momtazuddin Fakir on Monday said it was not justified to give shelter TO recently sacked Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan in the American Embassy.
He said this while replying to the reporters after a press conference organised to present a statement issued by 510 Supreme Court lawyers, mostly Awami League supporters, on Monday protesting the open letter sent by the global leaders to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the trial proceedings of Nobel Laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus.
Md Abdun Nur Dulal, Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), on behalf of the lawyers presented the statement in a press conference.
Lawyer Momtazuddin said, “He (sacked DAG) cannot give such statement from the office of the Attorney General.
This is clear violation of laws.
He gave such statement to create a controversy.”
He further said, “Imran Ahmed went to the American Embassy on his own initiative.
He went there not from any fear which he acknowledged.
But it was not justified to give shelter him (Imran Ahmed) in the American Embassy.”
Meanwhile, the statement said, “We have been noticed about the letter sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from some Nobel Laureates and global figures.
The global leaders urged to stop the judicial proceedings running in different courts of the country against Prof Yunus.
We consider this kind of addressing as a clear threat to the sovereignty of the country and also to the impendence of the judiciary.”
As lawyers of the highest court of the country, we are deeply concerned about such “undue interference in the judicial process of Bangladesh”, also read the statement.
Earlier on September 7, a total of 301 lawyers of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, mostly pro-BNP lawyers, issued a statement demanding for an end to the present government’s harassment and oppressive measures against Prof Yunus.
