Three research projects launched at BAU

In a workshop organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), three new research projects were inaugurated.
These projects focus on reducing post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables, increasing production of Nile tilapia fish for climate adaptation, and developing a domestic strain of avian influenza virus vaccine for poultry.
The Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) provided financial support for these research projects within the framework of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program aimed at promoting technological innovations in Bangladesh’s Agriculture sector.
The Inception workshop on DBBL-CSR Grant for Technology Incubation in Agriculture Funded Projects of Bangladesh Agricultural University took place on Saturday, August 12th, at the Syed Nazrul Islam Conference Room of the university.
A total of 200 million Bangladeshi Taka has been allocated for these projects. During the event, the Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited, Abul Kashem Mohammed Shirin was present as chief guest and The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Emdadul Haque chowdhury has delivered his speech as chief patron.
Professor Dr.md. abul mansur, Convenor, Dean council, Md. Abdur razzaque akanda, programme coordinator of DBBL-CSR project were also present as special guests.
The first project aims to address the issue of post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables. Professor Chayan Kumar Saha of the Department of Farm Power and machinery ,faculty of Agricultural Engineering & technology at BAU presented a solution involving the use of controlled environment storage techniques, which could potentially reduce storage losses by around 50%.
The second project focuses on the development of a high-yielding strain of Nile tilapia fish for increased production and climate adaptation.
Dr. Md. Golam Kader Khan from the Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics presented this project, which involves using advanced breeding techniques to create more productive fish strains.
Lastly, the third project deals with the development of a domestic strain of avian influenza virus vaccine to combat poultry outbreaks.
Dr. Jahangir Ara Begum from the Department of Pathology discussed the importance of creating a vaccine from a local strain of the virus to ensure its effectiveness in Bangladesh.
During the event, the Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited, Abul Kashem Mohammed Shirin, expressed gratitude for being able to contribute to these research endeavors.
He emphasized the importance of a conducive environment for research and education and applauded the university’s efforts to promote advanced learning and research.
