Flood situation worsening in country

Flood situation will further deteriorate in many districts as flood forecasting agencies apprehended that extremely heavy rainfall likely in the upstream, which will continue next 4-5 days.

Meanwhile, all educational institutions in Chattogram city would remain closed on Tuesday due to waterlogging in the city for four consecutive days.

On the other hand, many low-lying areas in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Barguna, Bandarban and Feni went under water.

All the major rivers in the North and South-eastern region of the country are in rising trend, which will continue next 72 hours. Besides, The Brahmaputra and the
Jamuna Rivers are in rising trend which also may continue in next 72 hours too.

As a result, low-lying areas of Nilphamari, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Sirajganj and Bogura will be undated due to flood water.

According to Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the Ganges and the Padma Rivers are in steady state, which may continue in next 24 hours.

According to meteorological agencies, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the north-eastern and adjacent upstream parts of Bangladesh in next 24-72 hours. For this reason, all the major rivers-Surma, Kushiyara, Manu, Khowai, Sarigowain, Jhalukhali, Bhugai-Kangsha, Someswari and Jadukata-in the North-eastern region of the country may rise rapidly at times during these periods.”

According to meteorological agencies, there is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the South-eastern hill basin and adjacent upstream parts of Bangladesh in next 24-48 hours, he said, adding that for this reason, all the major rivers-Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Karnafuli, Sangu, Matamuhuri-in the South-eastern region of the country may rise.

Our Chattogram bureau reports: Authorities of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Monday announced that all educational institutions in Chattogram city would remain closed on Tuesday due to waterlogging in the city for four consecutive days.

As most of the educational institutions went under water in the low-lying areas in Chattogram city, the DSHE authorities took the decision, said Chattogram district education officer Uttam Khisha.

Chittagong University authorities, however, announced that the varsity would remain closed from August 8 to August 10 due to natural disaster, according to the university’s acting registrar KM Nur Ahmed.

Patenga area of Chattogram city recorded 306 mm rainfall in 24 hours last Monday till 4 pm. At the same time, 212 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Tigerpass Ambagan area of the city, Chittagong Meteorological Department said.

Mainly due to the influence of monsoon and monsoon winds, there is heavy to very heavy rainfall in various parts of the country including Chittagong. As a result, the organization has also issued a warning of landslides.

Taking into account the warning, the administration is working to evacuate the people who are living at risk in the hills of Chittagong city to safe shelters as soon as possible.

As of writing this report on Sunday, Vijay Nagar, Jheel-1,2,3 in Akbarshah area of the city; 500 families have been evacuated from Shantinagar, Beltlighona to safe shelters. On the other hand, 300 people living at risk at the foot of the city’s Lalkhan Bazar Motijharna Pahar have been evacuated.

Assistant meteorologist Ujjal Kanti Pal said, ‘there has been heavy rain in Patenga area of Chittagong city. The area has recorded 306 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6 pm on Sunday. Tiger Pass Ambagan area of the city recorded 212 mm rainfall. However, due to heavy rainfall, landslide warning has been given in advance. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely for another two to three days.
Umar Farooq, Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kattoli Circle said, “Until Sunday evening, the people living at risk in different hills of Chittagong city have been brought to shelters. 100 families are safe in two shelters. There is enough food stocked in the shelter for them.
Meanwhile, the city’s Bahaddarhat, Badurtala, Shulakbahar, Mohammadpur, Kapasgola, Chawkbazar, various areas of Baklia, Katalganj, Shanti Bagh residential area, KB Aman Ali Road, Chandgaon’s Shamserpara, Faridarpara, Pathainagoda, Munshipukur Par, Agrabad CDA residential area, three pool heads were hit by heavy rains. , Riazuddin Bazar, Muradpur and Halishahar have accumulated water on roads and alleys.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal no 3 and all fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
