A youth was killed at the Awami League Rally when two of its factions locked in a clash over trifle matters, leaving four others injured.
The identity of the deceased could not immediately be known, but the youth was around 25-year old.
The injured persons were identified as Md Ariful (18), Md Jobayer (18), Md Roni (32), and Md Mobasher (18).
Hayatul Islam Khan, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Motijheel Division, confirmed the death to The New Nation on Friday night.
He said, “A clash erupted between two groups of Awami League associated bodies at Gulistan, leaving one person killed and several other individuals injured.
The injured have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and additional information will be provided in due course.”
ALsources said that, the supporters of former food minister Quamrul Islam attacked the adherents of Keraniganj Upazila Chairman Shahin Ahmed with sharp weapons, leaving some people of the Chairman injured.
Meanwhile, BNP activists have allegedly been attacked by Awami League men at different places in the capital before and after the grand rally of the party.
On the contrary, Police, mostly in plainclothes, arrested over 1000 leaders and activists in last two days of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and 818 were sent to jail in last 48-hour.
BNP leaders claimed that the government is repeatedly inciting our party men to create anarchy with the motive of foiling the ongoing movement. They are arresting our leaders and activists through raiding the hotels and residences.
However, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials claimed they were conducting the raids in hotels and other places on ‘specific information’ while the BNP alleged that the arrests were ‘selective’ ahead of their rally.
In another incident, Md Anower Hossain, 28, was reportedly beaten by Awami League supporters mercilessly in front of Notre Dame College in the Motijheel area.
Anower Hossain was rescued and rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Friday evening, with serious injuries.
Another BNP activist Mahbubur Rahman was also injured in a clash while joining the grand rally.
“Mahbubur’s condition was serious,” said DMCH police outpost in-charge Md Bacchu Mia.
Babu Gazi, a companion of Mahbubur, stated to reporters at the hospital that they were assaulted by Awami League activists with sticks while they were on their way to the BNP rally at about 4pm.
Regarding the arrest, DMP commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq said that they have set up round-the-clock checkpoints around the capital. In 2015, a Tazia procession came under violent attack. After this incident, the police always remain alert to fend off any disturbances centring the religious event.”
