EU representatives in Dhaka to talk with govt, civil society

Staff Reporter  :
EU Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore arrived in Dhaka on Monday with a wide ranging agenda including meetings with the government and civil society.
During his six-day visit, he will also pay a visit to the Rohingya camps to see the overall situation of the stateless people sheltered in Cox’s Bazar.

Upon arrival of Eamon Gilmore at the Hazrat International Airport, Acting Foreign Secretary Rear Admiral Khurshed Alam welcomed him with a bouquet of flowers. He is likely to hold meetings with Law Minister Anisul Haq, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam.
Shahriar Alam invited Gilmore to visit Bangladesh when he met him in Brussels in May.

However, this is the second visit of Gilmore. He first came to Bangladesh in 2019.
During his first visit, he talked about various issues including the human rights and the labour rights.
Gilmore was Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2011 until July 2014 in a coalition government which succeeded in steering Ireland from an IMF bailout to become one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union.

Meanwhile, the visits of the representatives from the United States and the EU countries have intensified ahead of the election.
The representatives are talking about the free and fair elections, freedom of association of the political parties and media freedom.
