2 journalists killed, 150 tortured in six months: BFUJ

At least two journalists were killed and 150 attacked in various ways, including assault, lawsuits, arrests, torture and threats in first six months of the year. The two journalists were killed in January and June. Another three journalists died abnormally. As many as 40 journalists were harassed in March alone.
In January, 18 journalists were tortured, in February 25, in April 24, in May 14, and in June 29. Many of them, including editors of leading newspapers, have been victims of harassment in cases under the Digital Security Act. Apart from this, seven people were arrested and jailed.
The monitoring committee of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) got this information of journalists oppression by keeping an eye on the country’s both leading newspapers and online news portals. BFUJ President M Abdullah and Secretary General Nurul Amin Rokan, Vice President Rashidul Islam, Assistant Secretary General Shahidullah Miyaji, Publicity Secretary Mahmud Hasan and Office Secretary Tofail Hossain are working in this monitoring committee.
