US seeks wider deeper ties with Bangladesh

Staff Reporter  :
The United States is determined to further strengthen its ties with Bangladesh in various key areas from security collaboration to addressing climate change and enhancing trade relations.
The US has expressed its intentions during a media briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday when a journalist asked about Biden administration’s new plan to boost its engagement for counterterrorism in Bangladesh.
Vedant Patel, US government’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson, said, “But last year we celebrated an anniversary as it relates to our bilateral relationship with Bangladesh, and this year in 2023 we look forward to deepening that relationship, and there are a number of areas in which we intend to deepen that cooperation.”

“One of them, of course, is the opportunity for security cooperation with Bangladesh. But in addition to security cooperation, there of course continues to be potential for deepening our cooperation on climate issues, on trade issues, and many other issues of the like,” he continued.

As Bangladesh gears up for its forthcoming parliamentary election early next year, the United States has intensified its focus on ensuring a transparent and unbiased electoral process. Contd on page-2 Col-4
Following the previous parliamentary election, the US government has expressed its strong desire to witness a free and fair election, enabling voters to exercise their democratic rights without any form of intimidation or hindrance.

In a significant move, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, recently announced a revised Visa Policy for individuals from Bangladesh.

The policy underscores the United States’ commitment to supporting democratic values and discouraging any attempts to undermine the electoral integrity in Bangladesh.
Under the new Visa Policy, it has been explicitly stated that any Bangladeshi individual found responsible for impeding the conduct of a free and fair election will face severe US visa restrictions.
Notably, these restrictions extend beyond the individuals themselves and may also affect their immediate family members.

By implementing these measures, the United States aims to send a strong message about the importance of upholding democratic principles and protecting the rights of voters in Bangladesh.
The announcement of the Visa Policy changes has had a discernible impact on the political atmosphere within Bangladesh.

By emphasizing the importance of free and fair elections, the US aims to promote a democratic culture that respects the will of the people and reinforces the foundations of good governance.
As the parliamentary election in Bangladesh approaches, the United States’ call for an unimpeded democratic process resonates strongly.
The Visa Policy changes serve as a reminder of the international community’s vigilance in safeguarding the fundamental principles of democracy and reinforcing the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people to elect their representatives in a fair and transparent manner.
