Kane becomes England’s all-time leading WC scorer

Harry Kane etched his name into England’s football history on Saturday, breaking Gary Lineker’s 36-year-old record and becoming his country’s all-time leading World Cup (WC) scorer with his 11th goal at the tournament, as the Three Lions won Group L.

Kane drew level with Lineker during England’s 4-2 win over Croatia and clinched the record in front of an ecstatic crowd at New York New Jersey Stadium, heading a goal off a fine assist from Jude Bellingham.

“It’s an honour to play with him. For me he’s the best England player of all time,” said Bellingham, after victory over Panama.

“He’s the one who has showed up more than anyone, any England player. It’s quite easy to play with him. In all honesty he’s at a level at the minute which is just incredible.

“You don’t doubt him at all in terms of whether he’s involved or not you know he’s going to make a difference.”

Bellingham and Harry Kane scored in the second half to send England to the World Cup round of 32.

England will play one of the eight best third-placed teams in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.

England’s Bellingham broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Bukayo Saka delivered a low corner towards Bellingham at the near post and the Real Madrid man was able to guide the volley in.

Kane doubled England’s lead five minutes later, with a classic header.

Bellingham was again involved in a goal, who latched onto Marcus Rashford’s long ball before digging out the cross for Kane, who became his country’s highest scoring player at World Cups after scoring.
