Rickshaw fares fixed at DU campus

The Dhaka University (DU) students pleased as the rickshaw will run with a fixed fare through the campus from today.

The student have been suffering as they had to do bargaining for fare and sometimes they especially female students had been being insulted for this.

The students said that, they have been suffering for long time as the rickshaw pullers wanted more amounts. But they still not fully hopefully as whether it will be implemented properly or not and they wanted a proper management of it.

“Such initiative was taken earlier but it didn’t come to the light. If the fixed fare will be implemented properly without keeping it only paper, it will be helpful for student. I hope the violent behavior of rickshaw pullers will be removed by it,” Shaheed Jahidi, Resident of Sir A F Rahman Hall said.

The DU administration have fixed rickshaw fare for the university area while the ruling Awami League’s student wing the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) helped the authority and provided uniform to hundreds rickshaw pullers.

According to the rickshaw fare chart, the minimum fare is Tk 15 and the maximum is Tk 55. Fare list was also hanged out at 16 place of the campus.

However, apart from the uniformed rickshaw pullers, other said that the fare is reasonable except from some places.

DU proctor professor Maksudur Rahman said, Those who will be included in this circle will have a dress coat and the students will be able to identify them by looking at the dress coat. He also said that this fixed fare is not applicable for those who are outside this circle.

Former Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) member and general secretary of DU unit Chhatra League Tanvir Hasan Shaikat who took the initiatives said, “We took this initiative by holding discussions with rickshaw pullers and students.”
