Dhaka has six times more vehicles than its capacity

Dhaka has six times more vehicles than its capacity, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq said.
“Extreme environmental pollution is occurring in the city due to this reason. There is no environment where a healthy person can walk on road without dust and honking of the horn,” he added.

He made the remarks while inaugurating a bicycle rally organized by BRAC at Dhaka’s Hatirjheel on the occasion of UN Global Road Safety Week.
The DMP Commissioner further said, “Health would be good if the environment is good. Both protecting the environment and maintaining good health are necessary. Cycling and walking do not harm the environment. There are two benefits to cycling. One is good environment and another is good health.”

He said, “There should be separate lane for bicycle on the road. Bicycle does not contaminate the environment.”
