Readers’ Voice

A very wise commentary by Mr. Mainul Hosein

My heartfelt thanks to respected Mainul Hosein of The New Nation for his wise commentary titled “Be the people’s government by holding people’s election and be free from fear”.
He told all the right things becoming the voice of the people which they are demanding from the ruling party. We are baffled as to why Awami League is refusing to an election under a caretaker government. Did not they observed hartals for 173 days and killed people like snakes with sticks for caretaker government? Then is why this aversion to it?
We detest this attitude of Awami League by refusing giving people their due right they are doing more harm than good to themselves. We hope they will come to their senses and save the country from destructions.

Living worth

A dead elephant is worth more than a living one, goes the adage. The same holds true for whales. Cetaceans have been hunted almost to extinction for their oil. But there are greater incentives to save whales. Whales bioaccumulate toxins and serve as vital indicators of what ails the planet.
Further, whale poop acts as fertiliser for phytoplankton. And when they eventually die, their carcasses act as sizeable carbon sinks. Given the rate at which the Amazon rainforest – the earth’s lungs – is being burned down, perhaps a living whale is worth its weight in gold when it comes to reducing humanity’s carbon footprint.
