Five to walk gallows in Monira murder trial

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced five people to death for murder of new bride Monira Parvin in a dowry-related dispute.
After several deferrals, Judge Mafroza Parveen of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 of Dhaka pronounced the verdict on Thursday.
The death-row convicts are bridegroom Nasir’s brother Masud, sister Hasina, uncle Din Islam, brother-in-law Milon and Milon’s brother Delowar Hossain. They were also fined Tk 100,000 each. However, Nasir Hossain was acquitted.
The convicts were out of the jail on bail. After the verdict, the convicts were taken to the prison.
In her verdict, the judge said, “This was a cold-blooded murder and the convicts must not flee from the dock.”
The prosecution then urged the court for additional security and sends the convicts to the prison.
Monira’s father, Md Mostofa, broke down in tears as the verdict was being read out. He thanked the court and appealed to implement the sentences swiftly.
“We are satisfied that Nasir was acquitted,” said Monira’s cousin Habiba Akthtar Iti after the verdict.
“We have no objections against him. He was not involved in the killing. None of us testified against him.”
According to the case statement, victim Monira left home to buy some medicine at about 5 pm on June 18 in 2013 and went missing. Later, the family members of the victim came to know that she got married with Nasir Hossain. After the marriage, the family members of Nasir tortured Monira centering the marriage and left her seriously injured. Later, she died while she was under treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Md Mostofa, a rickshaw driver, filed the murder case about his daughter Monira’s murder with Khilkhet Police Station in the capital on June 23 of the year. Nasir, his uncle, and 11 others were made accused in the case.
