Bangladeshi mother, daughter killed in US road crash

A Bangladeshi mother and her daughter have been killed and two other members of their family injured after a vehicle travelling the wrong way crashed into their car in Maryland, US.

The crash occurred on Interstate 270 near Bethesda in Montgomery County on Saturday evening. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was allegedly drunk at the time and was also injured, according to the state’s attorney.

The deceased have been identified as Shamima Begum, 46, and her daughter Areebaah Zahin, 23. Shamima’s husband, Faruk Hossain, 62, who was driving the family car, and their nine-year-old daughter Rubaiya Hossain were injured.

The family lived in Alexandria, Virginia, and had moved to the US from Barguna, Bangladesh, on immigrant visas a few years ago.

Shamima and Areebaah were laid to rest on Monday following a funeral service at the Islamic Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

US BNP leader Anwarul Islam travelled from New York to attend the funeral.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, he said the Bangladeshi community was mourning the tragedy.

Faruk suffered seven broken ribs and back pain, while Rubaiya sustained a head injury. Both were receiving treatment in the ICU of a Maryland hospital.
