The authority of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has decided to operate metro rail services from 8am to 8pm, six days a week, from May 31 considering the growing demand and popularity of the city dwellers.
Apart from it, the trial run of metro rail from Agargaon to Motijheel will begin in July.
Briefing journalists, Managing Director MAN Siddique of DMTCL, said that as per the new schedule, the weekly closure of the metro rail service will be Friday instead of Tuesday.
He also informed that 90 per cent construction work between Agargaon and Motijheel have already been completed and they are optimistic to run the metro rail in this
part MRT-6 second section from next December.
The change in weekend schedule was made keeping the office going passengers in mind, he said adding that the new schedule divides the 12 hours of the day into four parts.
“Metro rail will run every 10 minutes during peak hours from 8am to 11am and every 15 minutes from 11am to 3pm taking into account off-peak hours, while metro rail will run every 10 minutes from 3pm to 6pm as peak hour and every 15 minutes from 6pm to 8pm in consideration of off-peak hours,” MAN Siddique said.
The metro rail is now operating from 8am to 2pm.
MAN Siddique also said that they are considering operating the metro rail till midnight by next July and the schedule will be finalised soon.
Regarding opening train services from Agargaon to Motijheel, he said, “If we won’t able to open all the stations at once, then we will operate the metro rail services from Agargaon to Motijheel in phases.”
The work progress of the second part between Agargaon and Motijheel over 90 percent completed, DMTCL Managing Director said adding that now some electrical works are going on in this part. Regarding the progress of Motijheel-Kamalapur section, he said that 31 pilings work have been completed up to Kamalapur and remaining piling work is in progress.
