Coordination and awareness must to prevent inferno: LGRD Minister

Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Md Tajul Islam on Thursday said that coordination among government agencies and public awareness is a must to prevent fire incidents.

He said that all of the infrastructures in the city would be built following the rules and regulations for preventing incidents of infernos.

The minister warned that if any one violates the rules related to fire safety during construction of any kind of infrastructure, then legal action must be taken against the responsible people.

“The responsible engineer, architect or owner of the building whose negligence will be found must be brought under legal action, “Tajul Islam said.

The minister came up with the remarks while addressing as the chief guest at a city dialogue titled “Causes of repeated fire accidents: steps to prevent”, organized by Nagar Unnayan Sangbadik Forum at the National Press Club.

Amitosh Pal, President of the Nagar Unnayan Sangbadik Forum presided over the event. Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Chief Executive Officer Md Mizanur Rahman, Dhaka Wasa Chief Engineer Kamrul Hasan, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director Lt Gen (retd) Md Abul Kalam Azad were,among others, present at the event.

The Minister said that there is no option but to follow all the rules and regulations properly during construction work of infrastructures to prevent infernos.

To ensure prevention of fire incident the infrastructures and installations should be kept with enough roads, reservoirs, and open space, the minister added.

“Coordination among the government agencies and people’s awareness are very important to prevent fire incidents,” he said.

“If everyone performs their own duties, we will be able to prevent fire incidents.” The Minister said also that the population of the city and the facilities for them should be determined to build a livable city.

“For the excessive population pressure and inadequate civic facilities, our capital city is falling in terms of livability,” he said. Tajul Islam also has stressed on regular drills and training to make skilled manpower and people to prevent fire accidents.

He also highlighted on increasing citizens’ awareness to prevent fire accidents from cigarette fire. The Minister called for creating a social movement to prevent fire incidents rather than regretting for the loss of lives and property from the fire blazes.
