CMC expels 7 BCL activists for torturing students

The Chittagong Medical College (CMC) expelled seven activists of CMC unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on different terms over torturing four students in the college hostel on February 8.
The decision was taken at the CMC academic council meeting on Thursday evening as several allegations, including torturing four students in the dormitory, were proved, said CMC Principal Professor Shahena Akter.
The expelled students are–Abhijit Das and Md Riazul Islam Chowdhury of the 59th MBBS batch; Saju Dash, Sourav Debnath, Mahin Ahmed, Zakir Hossain Sayel, and Md Ibrahim Khalil Shakib of the 62nd batch.
One of them was expelled for three years, three for two years and the remaining three for one and a half years.
The meeting has decided to install close circuit
cameras at the main gate of CMC and appoint several hostel superintendents instead of one.
On February 8, a group of BCL activists tortured four students at CMC hostel from midnight to evening as suspecting that they were the activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Of them, two students were admitted to ICU at CMCH while two others received primary treatment.
Later, CMC formed a committee, led by CMC Vice Principal Prof Dr Hafizul Islam, to probe into the allegations of torture of the students.
Contacted, Avijit Das declined to make any comments on the punitive action taken against them.
