An all-round performance by Shakib Al Hasan powered Bangladesh to earn an easy 50-run win over England in their third One Day International (ODI) match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Monday.
Shakib Al Hasan struck a splendid 75. His 71-ball innings laced with seven fours. He captured four wickets for 35 runs. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his match-winning performance. Shakib Al Hasan is the only bowler of Bangladesh who captured 300 wickets in the ODI cricket. He played 227 ODI matches to earn the feat.
He got to the landmark with the wicket of Rehan Ahmed in the third ODI against England in Chattogram. Shakib also became the third all-rounder to score more than 6000 runs and take 300 wickets in ODIs, joining Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi. He is the third left-arm spinner to get to this landmark after Daniel Vettori and Jayasuriya.
Shakib took his first ODI wicket in 2006 when Elton Chigumbura fell to him in Harare. Shakib’s hundredth ODI wicket was Asad Shafiq in Dambulla in the Asia Cup in 2010. Hashim Amla was his 200th wicket in Dhaka in 2015.
When Shakib took his 270th wicket in 2021, he became Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in ODIs, overtaking Mashrafe Mortaza’s 269 for Bangladesh (he took one wicket for Asia XI).
Shakib is also Bangladesh’s highest wicket-taker in Tests and T20Is with 231 and 128 wickets, respectively. He is currently the fifth-highest wicket-taker in T20s with 443 wickets, and is one of only two players to have scored 6000 runs, taken 400 wickets and picked up 50 catches in T20s.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh piled up a satisfactory 246 runs in the 48.5 overs and then shot out England for 196 runs off 43.1 overs.
Bangladesh lost their early two wickets for 17 runs.
One-down Najmul Hossain Shanto and second-down Mushfiqur Rahim repaired the damage contributing together 98 runs for the third wicket partnership before Shanto was run out by a joint- effort of Jos Buttler and Rehan Ahmed when the home side’s total was 115 for the loss of three wickets.
Shanto hit a marvelous 53. His 71-ball innings was laced with five fours.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan mended their innings scoring together 38 runs in the fourth wicket stand before Mushfiqur Rahim was bowled out by Adil Rashid when Bangladesh’s score was 153 for the loss four wickets.
Mushfiq notched up a superb 70. His 93-ball knock saw six fours.
Later, Shakib and Afif Hossain built a worthy partnership. They put on together 49 runs in the sixth wicket stand before Afif (15) was caught at the short extra cover by Moeen Ali off Chris Woakes when the hosts’ total was 212 for the loss of six wickets.
After Afif’s dismissal, Bangladesh batters failed to build any notable partnership.
Jofra Archer grabbed three wickets in the space of 35 runs, while Adil Rashid and Sam Curran bagged two wickets each instead of 21 and 51 runs respectively.
Later, one-down James Vince, opener Phil Salt and six-down Chris Woakes fought back against the superb bowling attack of Bangladesh.
Ebadot Hossain and Taijul Islam bagged a pair of wickets each giving 38 and 52 runs respectively.
Mustafizur Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one wicket each for 25 and 46 runs respectively.
Vince hit a respectable 38. His 44-ball innings saw three fours and a sixer. He was a victim of Shakib Al Hasan.
Salt struck 35 from 25 deliveries featuring seven fours. He was also a victim of Shakib.
Woakes made 34 from 46 balls including two fours.
