DU admin must stop mugging by ruling party-backed students

Allegations are there that a quarter of students of the country’s highest echelon Dhaka University, who are connected with the ruling regime, have become muggers and snatchers. It is supposed that getting a chance into the university is a symbol of prestige and pride for its role in leading every political change and source of the country’s politicians and bureaucrats. Unfortunately, things fall apart, and the glory turns upside down due to extreme politicisation, political recruitment of faculty, subservient behaviour of faculties and absence of any actual authority to govern the university except the Chhatra League. Every crime happened here under the cover of the spirit of independence and led by the glorious student wing of the ruling regime.
There’s a proctorial team, whose main duty is to protect the interest of the ruling party’s all misdeeds, covering assaulting dissent opinionates, and slaving the regime, though the university is statutorily autonomous. Absent research works by the faculties and students, carrier guidelines for students, who are admitted here with higher results, and dormitory facilities run by the student wing with many others have made the once globally recognised university a safe haven for criminals.
News media reported that mugging incidents on the DU campus had increased significantly in the past few months. The attackers are becoming more desperate. Law enforcers admitted that most of these criminals are DU students. On Sunday, police arrested three DU students for beating and stealing Tk 15,000 from a covered-van driver near the Buet campus. A Dhaka court later sent them to jail on February 6. The day these three were sent to jail, DU authorities suspended two more BCL leaders. The reason is easy to guess at this point. Tanzir Arafath Tushar and Rahul Ray were suspended after allegations of mugging surfaced against them. Tushar, the joint secretary of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall BCL, was initially apprehended by police but was released later. Rahul was a member of the last BCL central committee.
Unfortunately, these incidents are just the tip of the iceberg. The perpetrators usually choose their targets carefully. They attack couples or people using substances, knowing very well that these people are less likely to report the crimes committed against them due to social stigma. Although the issue is perennial, the gang has become more reckless than ever lately because of the culture of impunity. We must blame DU authorities, all the faculties, BCL and the government for running the mayhem. Everyone is responsible for poisoning Dhaka University.
