Bangladesh to get Adani power in the first week of March
Staff Reporter :
There is no need to worry about power supply during summer and irrigation season as imported electricity will be connected to the national grid from India’s Adani Godda Power Plant in the first week March.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral resources Nasrul Hamid said this while briefing journalists at his Secretariat office on Sunday.
However, he said the project missed several deadlines, the last being 16 December last year.
Apart from this, some coal-fired power plants will come into production, including Rampal, SS power and Barisal power plant.
“Bangladesh will get 750 MW of electricity from Adani’s first unit which will be connected to the national grid in the first week of March. Another 750 MW of electricity will come from the Adani’s second unit in April . There is no problem with price of the electricity, and it (price) would not be costlier than Payra Power Plant,” Nasrul Hamid said.
According to the State Minister, there is no basis for what is being said about Adani’s electricity as Bangladesh will get the electricity at competitive market rates.
“Efforts have been taken to keep the electricity supply normal and there is nothing to panic about the irrigation season. Import of LNG from the spot market has already been started and gas supply will be increased. The government plans to import eight cargoes of LNG from the Spot Market,” Nasrul Hamid added.
Meanwhile, local and international energy think tanks, including the Center for Policy Dialogue and the USA-based Institute of Energy and Economic Financial Analysis (IEEFA), have found that the cost of the Adani Power Plant will be an expensive source for Bangladesh.
A dedicated transmission line has been built to supply electricity from the Adani power plant to Bangladesh.
The Power Purchase Agreement was signed between Bangladesh Power Development Board and Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited to import 1496 MW (Net) from Coal Fired Power Generation Facility at Godda District, Jharkhand, India on November, 5, 2017.
