Death mystery of Saifur Rahman should be probed
BNP’s acting secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has commented that the mystery behind former finance minister M Saifur Rahman’s death should be investigated. He made this remark at a discussion meeting organised by the M Saifur Rahman Smriti Parishad on the occasion of Saifur Rahman’s 17th death anniversary at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club on Monday.
Rizvi said, “One matter always haunts my mind… Saifur Rahman sir died after being caught in an accident. Was this merely an accident, or was there some national or international conspiracy? We need to find this out today as well. Because a man like him (Saifur Rahman), who made such a small, poverty-stricken country stand on the foundation of an economy, who gave it a foundation… many countries did not like this.”
He said, “Many countries or many internal forces who do not like nationalist forces-that Bangladesh will develop its own economy, will become self-sufficient in food based on its own agricultural economy-I think some people did not like this. So there is a suspicion regarding the accident of his death.
We have heard since then that, is this accident of Saifur Rahman sir merely an accident? We have to find out whether there is any conspiracy behind it.”
Highlighting the career of M Saifur Rahman, who served continuously as finance minister during the tenure of martyr President Ziaur Rahman and Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the BNP acting secretary general said, “The late Saifur Rahman is an asset of this nation, the pride of BNP.
Due to his various contributions, he is an asset of the nation. His achievements are so extensive; these achievements are recognised at home and abroad today. We feel proud because he was involved with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.”
At the discussion meeting presided over by M Saifur Rahman’s son, Member of Parliament M Naser Ahmed, Parliament Whip GK Gaus, Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha-JASAS president Helal Khan, and leaders from Sylhet and Moulvibazar were present.
Former Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman died in a road accident on 5 September 2009 in the Brahmanbaria area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. On that day, he was coming to Dhaka from his home in Moulvibazar.
