Prices of broiler chicken, egg, ginger, vegetables go up

Prices of broiler chicken, egg and vegetables have increased in the capital’s kitchen market, putting additional pressure on the consumers.
In last three days, the price of broiler chicken has increased by about Tk 30 per kg and sold at Tk 180-190 a kg on Friday, market sources said.
Brown farm egg price has increased by Tk 10 per dozen and sold at Tk 140-150 (a dozen), in the markets on Friday.
Besides, ginger prices also went up in the city markets.
Yesterday, local ginger was selling at Tk 150 to Tk 200 per kg, while imported ginger at Tk 330 to Tk 350. A week ago, local ginger was sold at Tk 150 to Tk 180 and imported Chinese ginger at Tk 230 to Tk 300.
Even the season of winter, prices of vegetables remained high.
Cauliflower sold at Tk 30 per piece, and large ones at Tk 40, cabbage at Tk 30 to Tk 40 per piece, tomato at Tk 40 per kg, papaya at Tk 30 per kg.
Similarly, new potatoes are being sold at Tk 40 per kg, pumpkin at Tk 40 per kg, broccoli at Tk 30 per piece, beans at Tk 50 per kg which were sold at Tk 30 per kg a few days ago.
The loose sugar was supposed to sell at Tk 107 while packed at Tk 112. But the traders were selling loose sugar at Tk 115 and packed at Tk120.
Meanwhile, rice prices in the city market also remained high.
After visiting capital’s Khilgoan Taltola and Malibagh market it was seen that a kg of coarse rice is being sold above Tk 50. Medium quality BR 28 rice is being sold above Tk 60 per kg. Miniket rice is available for a maximum of Tk 75 (per kg) and per kg Nazirshail rice was selling at Tk75 to Tk 85.
However not only the broiler chicken, the Pakistani
or Sonali chicken prices showed Tk 30-40 hike per kg as it was selling at Tk 300-330 a kg and indigenous chicken was retailing at Tk 550-600 per kg.
Md Jahangir, a chicken vendor at Karwan Bazar area in the city, said that prices have been increasing for last three weeks at farm levels. In last seven days we are facing huge supply shortage of all types of chicken which eventually pushes up the price level.
The price might surge further before the Ramzan, he added.
