Hero Alam files writ challenging EC’s decision

Ashraful Hossain Alam alias Hero Alam has filed two separate writ petitions with the High Court challenging the decisions of the Election Commission (EC) cancelling his nominations submitted for contesting Bogura-4 (Kahaloo-Nandigram) and Bogura-6 (Sadar upazila) constituencies by polls.
The petitions have been submitted to the High Court bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir on Monday. The bench may hold hearing on the petition on Tuesday.
The returning officer on January 8 cancelled Alam’s nomination papers submitted for both the constituencies during scrutiny as they found a discrepancy in the voter list of 1 percent given by the candidate with the nomination papers.
He filed appeal petitions with the Election Commission against the cancelling decisions which were also dismissed on January 12. Challenging the EC’s decision Hero Alam filed the writ petitions.
Lawyer Earul Islam who submitted the writ petitions on behalf of the Hero Alam said the HC bench may hold hearing on the petitions on Tuesday.
According to the Representation of the People Order, 1972, in the case of an independent candidate, should need to provide a list of signatures of one percent of electors of the constituency concerned.
The by-election to the six constituencies, including Bogura-4 and Bogura-6, will be held on February 1.
