Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Wednesday said that BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas should have been given division facilities in prison much earlier in compliance with the magistrate court’s order.
A magistrate court in Dhaka on December 9 ordered authorities concerned to give them division facilities under the jail code.
The HC, however, rejected two separate writ petitions which sought directives upon the prison authorities to give division facilities to Fakhrul and Abbas in jail.
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar placed the documents of division facilities for Fakhrul and Abbas, which was executed on December 13 therefore, making the writ petitions ineffective.
The HC bench of Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Ali passed the rejection order saying that those were not properly presented before the bench.
On Tuesday, Rahat Ara Begum, wife of Fakhrul, and Afroza Abbas, wife of Abbas, submitted the writ petitions to the High Court, saying their husbands deserve division facilities in jail under the jail code as they are former lawmakers and ministers.
Fakhrul, BNP secretary general, and Abbas, BNP standing committee member, are now in jail in a case filed over the December 7 clash between police and BNP men in the capital’s Nayapaltan area.
