554 killed in road accidents in Nov across BD:Report

In November, 463 road accidents occurred in Bangladesh which killed 554 people, according to a report by Road Safety Foundation.
These accidents also injured 747 people, said the report released on Sunday.
The report was prepared analyzing data from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.
Among the deceased, 78 were women and 71 were children, the report said.
Two hundred twenty-nine people were killed in 194 motorcycle accidents in November, which is 41.33% of the total number of fatalities.
According to the analysis, 41.46% of the accidents occurred on national highways.
Of these accidents, 17.49% were head-on collisions and 44.49% of the accidents happened as the drivers of the vehicles lost control on the steering..
Some 16% of the accidents were caused by three-wheelers, while bicycles, rickshaws and pedal vans were involved in 3.56% of them.
The report also found out that around 30.02% of the accidents occurred in the morning.
Most accidents happened in Dhaka division with 174 fatalities in 142 accidents. As a single district, Chittagong had the highest number of accidents at 27 and Mymensingh district had the highest number of fatalities at 25.
The least number of accidents occurred in Manikganj, Narail, Jhalakathi, Lalmonirhat and Rangamati. There were 11 accidents in
these 5 districts but no loss of life.
According to the report, road accidents occurred due to defective vehicles, reckless driving, inefficiency of drivers, physical and mental illness of drivers, reckless motorcycle riding by young people, and poor traffic management.
The tendency to ignore and disobey traffic laws by the public and extortion in the public transport sector are also among the reasons behind the accidents, the report added.
