8010 women, children become victims of rape in 2021

In 2021, the highest number of women and girls were raped, according to a report published by the ‘National Committee for Prevention of Women and Girls Abuse and Social Injustice’.
During this time, the committee has given information that 8010 women, starting from two years of girl child to 75 years of age, have been victims of rape.
On the occasion of International Women’s Violence Prevention Party and World Human Rights Day, the national convention organized the event in front of the slogan ‘Stop the torture of women and girls, build a new society’ on Monday afternoon in the city’s Engineers Institute.
According to the analysis of data published in 13 national dailies preserved in National Convention in 2021, violence against women is increasing at an alarming rate.
According to the report, two-year-old children to 75-year-old women did not escape from these tortures. According to the United Nations Special Report, 60 percent of married women in Bangladesh are victims of abuse at some point in their lives by their husbands or their families or both.
The report mentions that in 2021, rape was the most common victim of violence against women.
The year 2021 saw the highest number of rapes, with 810 rapes taking place during this period. And during this period, there were 225 cases of gang rape, besides 192 attempted rapes.
On the other hand, there were 96 incidents of harassment and sexual harassment.
According to the 2021 data-based survey report on violence against women and girls published by the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, girls between the ages of 14 and 18 are the most victims of rape and young people are involved in crimes like rape more than before.
Apart from this, the report said that 205 incidents of gang-rape occurred in 2022 till October. In 2021, there were 7 suicides due to rape, but in 2022, 7 suicides due to rape occurred within the 8 months of January-August. 45 people were killed due to dowry in 2021 and 53 people were killed due to dowry in 2022 till October.
Cybercrime has also been increased alarmingly in these cases.
Barrister Amirul Islam spoke as the chief guest on the occasion. Economist and Honorary Fellow of CPD Debapriya Bhattacharya and Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University Kaveri Gayen were also present in the event.
