RMG industry badly needs natural gas: BGMEA

Staff Reporter :
The country’s apparel industry badly needed natural gas supply for uninterrupted production, as flow of work orders is increasing.
“The electricity crisis faced by the apparel industry affecting production has been resolved. The industry now needs natural gas for uninterrupted production,” said Faruque Hassan, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
He was speaking at a press briefing on just-ended “Made in Bangladesh Week” in a city hotel on Saturday.
The BGMEA president said the flow of work orders is also increasing though not at a satisfactory pace.
The apparel factories were running under staggering holidays to save power, undermining their uninterrupted production.
Responding to the outcome of the branding exposition, Hassan said, “Large brands, a number of old and new buyers extended their commitments to source garment from Bangladesh.”
“Some 150 buyers joined from the Middle East, of whom 50 hailed from Kuwait alone. Some were from India, also,” he added.
Amid the ongoing adverse economic situation, the apex trade body has pledged to explore some new markets.
The BGMEA chief thinks that the buyer who attended the expo will come back to Bangladesh with work orders.
In the briefing, he wanted policy support of the government in the areas of customs clearances, bond and tax procedures.
BGMEA president said his members also will establish jute recycling facilities in Bangladesh that will produce value added products.
He further said the aim of the mega event was to take opinions from the stakeholders in line with forming a sustainable road map for the industry’s planned target of exporting apparel worth $100 billion by 2030.
“The apparel industry in Bangladesh makes significant moves toward sustainable manufacturing and continues to build a resilient ecosystem along the key stakeholders within the supply chain,” the BGMEA president said.
“The industry has undergone a massive transformation to ensure workplace safety, well-being of workers, and environmental sustainability. Going forward, the industry positions itself to pursue new areas of opportunity, growth, and excellence,” he added.
