The entrepreneurs of the country’s readymade garment sector vowed to keep their global apparel market share unhurt despite having manifold challenges.
“We all know the situation of the global economy, but we have to do our work. We can’t control the global economy. We even want to increase our market share while keeping the current export unhurt,” said Faruque Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The BGMEA chief was speaking at a press conference at a city hotel marking “Made in Bangladesh Week 2022” that starts in Dhaka today (Sunday).
The mega event will be arranged in partnership with the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange at the International Convention Centre, Bashundhara.
He said their intention is to work together with all stakeholders, including buyers and brands and hoped that they would grow by overcoming those challenges – domestic and global.
The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to inaugurate the week-long event at the Hall of fame of Bangabandhu International Conference Center. She will also launch two coffee table books, on which BGMEA has been working since the beginning of this year.
The first book titled The Untold Stories of Bangladesh RMG Industry: Economic, Social and Environmental Good Practices aims to highlight the positive changes that have occurred in the industry throughout the years.
The second book is titled Beauty of Bangladesh through which BGMEA tried to articulate the unseen beauty of Bangladesh.
Apart from these two books, the BGMEA will launch two other coffee table books after the events. One will be titled Heritage of Bangladesh and another will be prepared by compiling all the pictures received for MIB photography award.
Faruque Hassan said, “Through this mega event, we want to brand Bangladesh and showcase the innovations in our industry to the world.”
Urging the factory owners not to take orders at less than reasonable price, he said, “Buyers are not reducing apparel price, rather the factory owners are producing goods at less than reasonable price as the orders have declined in recent time due to global recession.”
Claiming that they were in discussion with the government to address the energy supply challenges, he said, “We have challenges. We need to move ahead overcoming the challenges.”
According to the organizers, the representatives of 550 foreign apparel brands and buyers are expected to take part in the week-long mega event.
The BGMEA will arrange five international events during the time– Dhaka Apparel Summit, Dhaka Apparel Expo, Bangladesh Denim Expo, Sustainable Design and Innovation Awards and Sustainable Leadership Awards, to increase the brand image of the garment sector in the world.
