Jamuna devours 300 meters areas in Sirajganj

Jamuna swallowed an area of 300 meters in a moment on Monday at Shahjahan intersection of Sirajganj Sadar with severe erosion. In this situation, people on the banks of the river have started evacuating their houses with anxiety.
Visiting on ground, it is seen that Chhongagacha Panchthakuri area of the upazila is facing massive erosion due to strong currents and eddies of the river. Ranjit Karmakar, Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Water Development Board, said that last year, when it broke at the same place, we temporarily repaired it. Tenders have been called for permanent repairs but work has not started yet. Suddenly on Monday morning, due to the eddy of Jamuna River, an area of more than 300 meters was demolished. However, dumping of Geo bags have been started to prevent erosion.
Meanwhile, locals have started shifting their houses and shops to other places due to the fear of erosion. In the meantime, half a hundred houses and shops in the vicinity have been evacuated. Apart from this, the Ranigra-Ratankandi regional road built on the side of the river bank embankment is also in danger of erosion. Abduur Razzak of Panchthakuri area said, “There is no time to move things when the destruction starts.”
Before this, everything including shops and goods were destroyed in the erosion. So now I am moving the store quickly in panic. Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan and Nazrul Islam said, “The way the river is breaking, it is not possible to say when everything including the settlements will disappear. Therefore, houses are being demolished and removed quickly. But I can’t say where to go.
