Snatching, theft incidents on the rise in capital

Snatching, robbery and theft incidents are increasing alarmingly in the capital city regularly.
Allegation raised that some snatching and extortions incidents are also occurring even in the guise of police as well as other forces in a broad daylight in the city.
As a result, inhabitants of the Dhaka city have become disappointed as most of the incidents are happing in front of people despite having police patrols around the areas.
The most recent the thrilling snatching and murder incident took place in Dhanmondi lake area of the capital. It shocked the whole nation as the incident happened in the aristocratic area like Rabindra Sarobar .
On October 22, Shahadat Hossain Majumdar, 51, a chief marine engineer of American ship and a resident of the capital’s Kalabagan, hacked to death by miscreants near Rabindra Sarobar at around 2:30am in the night.
SI Billal Hossain of Dhanmondi police station said the body was found near Rabindra Sarobar which had several stab marks.
The victim’s brother, Motalib Hossain, said that Shahadat used to go for walks at Dhanmondi Lake. “On Saturday, he got out of his home and never came back.
He added that the family informed police when they could not find him anywhere.
In this regard, Ikram Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Danmondi police station, told The New Nation that efforts are being made to arrest those involved with the incident. We initially believe that it was a snatching incident.
Though we collected several CC footage from the spots but unfortunately we couldn’t find out the exact face of the criminals
as there was loadshedding, OC said. Meanwhile, the number of theft incidents is also increasing in the capital. According to the information of DMP Media, about 1080 theft incidents have been occurred in Dhaka city first eight months of the year (January- August)
According to the detectives, the miscreants are looting by climbing the walls on top of the big buildings and cutting the grills. Actually preventing theft incidents is the biggest challenge for them at the moment.
Moshiur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB), said that most of the thieves are floating. They went missing after being arrested and granted bail. Arresting them is very challenging. Because they are very technologically savvy. Recently, besides speeding up the investigation of theft cases, there are special instructions from DMP to arrest thieves.
Mentionable that Motijheel Police arrested three police constables on the charge of extortion ofTk15 lakh in Motijheel of the capital. Arrested police members are identified as Md. Kamrul Islam (35), Rafiz Khan (26) and Tushar Imran (31).
Motijheel Zone Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Abul Hasan confirmed this to the media on Wednesday (October 26). He said that after the arrest they were taken to the court. The court sent them to jail after two days of remand.
