Cyclone Sitrang has caused immense financial losses to the farmers of Tangail due to continuous torrent and stormy winds. In the hilly areas of Ghatail upazila of the district, various types of crops including banana and papaya trees were severely damaged.
As consequences, many farmers of the district have become destitute and suffering from unfathomable depression due to the fear of losing their capital.
Visiting on ground of different areas of Ghatail upazila including Garobazar, Kajla, Sagardighi, Fatiamari, Shuktarbaid, Hatimara, Kamalpur, Dhalapara areas it can be noticed that the banana trees in various nurseries have collapsed and fallen to the ground causing huge economical loss.
A sign of grave disappointment is clear in Khawja Mia’s eyes, a banana farmer of Sagardighi area of the upazila. He said that about eight thousands of his banana trees were wrecked in the storm that causes huge financial losses near about 6 lakh taka. Sitrang has shattered my dream; I have nothing to left. I don’t know what to do now.
Dilshad Jahan, agriculture officer of Ghatail upazila, said that due to stormy winds along with rain, houses and crops have been severely damaged. In particular, Banana farmers have faced a massive economical loss. We will provide them necessary support from agriculture department after assessing their accurate loss.
