People in panic due to Teesta River erosion

The people of Jaldhaka and Dimla riverbanks of Nilphamari are distraught by the erosion of Teesta River. The arable land, settlements and various structures are disappearing under the river. People on the banks of the river are spending sleepless nights due to the fear of erosion.
Meanwhile, the Water Development Board says that renovation and repair work is continuing on an urgent basis to prevent erosion.
On Sunday, we went to the ground and found out that at the beginning of the dry season, the erosion has become severe due to the rapid flow of water in the Teesta River at various points of Jaldhakar Kaimari, Shaulmari, Dawabari, Golmunda and Dimlar Tepakharibari, Gayabari, Jhunagach Chapano Union in the beginning of the dry season. Settlements, agricultural land and various structures are going under the river. However, the Water Development Board is filling sand in geo- bags on an urgent basis to prevent the breach.
Some have lost everything due to the erosion of the river and are living on the road or in other people’s land. Locals fear that the erosion may become more severe.
In this regard, Executive Engineer of Dalia Division in Water Development Board, Ashfauddaula said, to prevent the erosion of Teesta, the repair work is going on by filling the sand with geo- bags and piling with thatched tiles through quotation.
Residents of Jaldhaka and Dimla Teesta area said that due to the collapse of Teesta, our crop lands and houses have been lost in the Teesta and we have become destitute. Can’t plant, can’t bring home. At present we are in other’s land. Locals demand construction of sustainable dam to prevent erosion.
