12kg LPG cylinder price rises to Tk 1,598

The price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder used for cooking has been increased by Tk 70 to Tk 1,598.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the revised price on Sunday, August 2, saying it would take effect from 6pm the same day. The previous price of a 12kg cylinder was Tk 1,528.

BERC has fixed the retail price of privately marketed LPG at Tk 133.15 per kilogram, taking international market prices into consideration.

Along with cylinder LPG, the prices of reticulated LPG and autogas have also increased. Private reticulated LPG supplied to households in liquid form will now cost Tk 129.40 per kilogram, while LPG supplied in gaseous form has been fixed at Tk 28.75 per litre. The price of autogas used in vehicles has been raised to Tk 73.67 per litre from Tk 70.40 in July, an increase of Tk 3.27 per litre.

However, the price of government-supplied LPG remains unchanged. The consumer price of a 12.5kg government LPG cylinder will remain at Tk 776.93, according to previous BERC directives.

BERC said the revised prices of private LPG and autogas were determined based on increases in international propane and butane prices, shipping costs, traders’ premiums and the US dollar exchange rate.

For August, Saudi Aramco set the contract price of propane at $620 per tonne and butane at $640 per tonne, with an average price of $633 per tonne. BERC also considered a shipping cost of $180 per tonne, traders’ premiums and an average exchange rate of Tk 123.69 per US dollar while calculating the new rates.

Under the revised rates, the prices of LPG cylinders of different sizes are as follows: 5kg at Tk 732, 12.5kg at Tk 1,664, 15kg at Tk 1,997, 16kg at Tk 2,130, 18kg at Tk 2,397, 20kg at Tk 2,663, 22kg at Tk 2,929, 25kg at Tk 3,329, 30kg at Tk 3,995, 33kg at Tk 4,394, 35kg at Tk 4,660 and 45kg at Tk 5,992.
In a press release, BERC warned that LPG must not be sold above the prescribed prices at any stage of storage, bottling, distribution or retail.

The commission said strict action would be taken against anyone found violating the prescribed prices.
