Are residences for top secys going to be castles of feudal lords of bygone days?

The plan for constructing two three-storey buildings for the cabinet secretary and principal secretary can give us a peek into what is going on with the country’s precious little public funds. Though the proposal for the project with a cost of about Tk 43 crore is awaiting approval at the planning commission, the fact is at a time when the country is reeling under an economic crisis and the prime minister is telling the nation to get prepared for a ‘famine’ in the near future, such a proposal for the luxurious housing projects for two higher government officials is an affront to any human decency.
Here the gloating lifestyle of the privileged few in society does not come into discussion, but the reality on the ground is the majority of people is now struggling to make their ends meet, not to mention those poor ones who are failing to provide for themselves even two square meals a day due to the unchecked food inflation resulting in from the recent fuel price hike. Beggars are seen more in number on the streets nowadays.
Considering the grim reality of the falling dollar reserves, sometime ago, the prime minister urged the authorities concerned to become austere and very selective in taking up new projects and suggested not to take up less important projects, but to select those ones that would fetch quick returns. But is the project for two buildings for the secretaries that important? We are not against the construction of the household facility for the top government officials. We are not at all. But why now, and why spending such a large sum of money?
According to reports surfaced in newspapers, each building with 18,513 square feet will have three floors, and the construction cost of each of the two buildings would be about Tk 21.5 crore. These two residences will have two sets of swimming pools with an estimated cost of Tk 5.10 crore. Besides, the project details say about Tk 2.25 crore will be spent on interior decoration for the two buildings. Still, over Tk 1.50 crore will be spent on furniture while the boundary wall and the main gate will require Tk 1.05 crore. We do not know, once constructed, how much money will be needed for the maintenance of such large residences, surely it would not be a small sum. Anyway, are these two buildings going to be castles the feudal lords used to have in the bygone days?
If today we had a government that is accountable to people, we would not have seen this mockery of the huge number of downtrodden people by the powerful few who are plundering money on the one hand and enjoying unnecessary perks and privileges like the filthy rich in society on the other hand.
