Tarique’s factual remarks cause heartburn to AL, says Fakhrul
UNB, Dhaka :
Defending party senior-vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s assertion that Bangabandhu was a “Razakar”, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said their leader’s factual remarks have
caused heartburn to the ruling party men who care little in making derogatory remarks against others.
Addressing a programme, he also hit back at the Prime Minister for calling Tarique a ‘spoiled son’ and asking him to hold tongue, saying she and her party men should exercise restraint in using words against their opponents.
“Do you lose your sense when you (AL leaders) call independence proclaimer Ziaur Rahman and deputy chief of staff of the Bangladesh Armed Forces during the Liberation War AK Khandaker Razakars? Now you feel the heartburn as Tarique Rahman unveiled the historical facts. You shouldn’t forget the tit for tat,” the BNP leader said.
Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, was addressing a convention arranged by pro-BNP student leaders of Ducsu and All Party Students Unity (Apsu) of the 90s at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
Earlier on Monday, BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman addressing a programme in London called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman a “great Razakar” for what he said disbanding Awami League calling it a “party of thugs” and claimed that Bangabandhu’s family had no contribution to the country’s Liberation War.
Reacting to his ‘derogatory’ remarks about Bangabandhu, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday advised BNP chief Khaleda Zia to ask her spoiled son to hold his tongue.
Without mentioning Tarique’s name, Hasina said people across the world, let alone those of Bangladesh, will not believe what he is uttering. “He’s uttering heinous words. People won’t tolerate this…this can’t be tolerated.”
In a counter-attack on the Prime Minister, Fakhrul said, “We don’t have such a bad taste like the Awami League president to utter the words and language she used. “You (Hasina) ask others to learn decent language and hold tongue. You please first speak in guarded words.”
Terming Awami League a genuine fascist party, he said the party talks about democracy but practices autocracy and fascism. “They’re holding office illegally and undemocratically as they usurped power with the force of arms. There’s no difference between the current Awami occupation force and Pakistani occupation force.”
He alleged that the ruling party has politicised every institution of the country and the party is now trying to re-establish one-party rule under a different cover.
Fakhrul called upon the current and former student leaders to get united to oust the current regime through a strong movement. “Let’s get united and wake up people being imbued with the spirit of the 90s to save the country from the grasp of this autocratic government.”
