Woman succumbs to burn injuries at DMCH

A newlywed woman succumbed to her burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Saturday. She was allegedly set on fire by her husband on suspicion of her extra marital affairs with a man at Keraniganj on the outskirts of the capital.
The victim has been identified as Irene Akhter, 24, wife of Asaduzzaman Jhantu, inhabitant of Keraniganj.
The deceased’s mother Taslima Begum said Irene got married with Jhantu, a salesman at a local shop on November 14.
She said that Jhantu started torturing Irene a
few days after their marriage, suspecting that she talked to other men in cell phone.
On the fateful Saturday morning, Jhantu picked up a quarrel with Irene over it and at one stage he allegedly poured kerosene on her body and set fire to her. Hearing her screams, locals rushed in and admitted Irene to the DMCH’s burn unit where she died around 7:30pm. Police at DMCH camp arrested Jhantu Miah on Saturday night.
Matchmaker of the marriage Anwar Bepari said Jhantu earlier married once and had a son from her. He divorced his first wife. Anwar said after a week of the marriage, Jhantu told him that he would divorce Irene. Anwar advised him to talk to the guardians of the woman.
Arbitration was held in which a settlement was reached. The girl went to her parents’ home in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj for few days. Following the arbitration, she had been living with her husband in a tenant in Keraniganj police station.
Irene’s younger brother Rajib visited his sister’s house when she told him that she was being tortured.
Jhantu claimed that Irene committed suicide and said that he was not present in the house at the time.
Jamaluddin Mir, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dakkhin Keraniganj Police Station said that police were yet to ascertain whether it was a case of murder or suicide.
