US travel restrictions in Bangladesh is not a less serious concern

US State Department asked its citizens not to travel Bangladesh due to Covid-19 when Bangladesh Health Minister said Covid-19 is phasing out. In the US travel ban advisory, the US government said travellers to Bangladesh may experience border closures, airport closures, travel prohibitions, quarantine requirements, stay at home orders, business closures, or other emergency conditions within Bangladesh due to Covid-19. However, the travel advisory emphasized law and order deterioration. Generally the US State Department issue level 4 travel advisory ‘do not travel’ when the security level becomes too dangerous and law and order system becomes dysfunctional.
The travel advisory said that it increased caution alarm in Bangladesh due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Travellers should be aware of petty crimes such as pickpocketing in crowded areas. Crimes such as muggings, burglaries, assaults, and illegal drug trafficking constitute the majority of criminal activity in Bangladesh’s major cities, but there are no indications that foreigners are being targeted because of their nationality. These crimes tend to be situational, based on time and location. Terrorism events can happen with little or no warning, with terrorists targeting public areas such as tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, restaurants, places of worship, school campuses, and government facilities. Because of security concerns US government employees in Bangladesh are subject to movement and travel restrictions. It suggests reconsidering travel to southeast Bangladesh, including the Chattogram Hill Tracts, due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Travel is dangerous to the Chattogram Hill Tracts due to occasional communal violence and other security risks.
When the law enforcers have no clue of terrorist attacks and law and order is upright, except some criminal activities by some derailed members of the law enforcing agencies, the travel ban may be the alternative picture of the law and order situation. Government must know who is responsible for the current culture of terror and intimidation when nobody feels secure and safe. The State must get rid of criminal elements within the security forces first and the travel ban could not be seen lightly.
