Stop withdrawal of ground water in 4 Patiya villages : HC

The High Court on Tuesday ordered eight industries to stop withdrawal of underground water in four villages of Patiya upazila in Chattogram.
It also asked the authorities concerned of the government to arrange supply of potable and household water for the villagers of Char Kanai, Hulaine, Panchuria and Habilash Dweep until the government decides whether the villages should be declared as water stressed area.
The HC Bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Shohrowardi passed the order upon a writ
petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA) in 2015 seeking necessary order in this regard.
Petitioner’s lawyer Advocate Syeda Rizwana Hasan told reporters that 350 tube-wells in the four villages have gone out of use as eight industries were withdrawing underground water in the area. As a result, around 30 thousand people were not getting potable and household water in the upazila, she said.
The HC asked the authorities concerned of the government to decide whether the four villages should be declared water stressed area under the Water Act.
The authorities should take steps to arrange supply of potable and household water to villages until they take the decision, the lawyer added.
