HC wants to know govt steps against mob beating

Law enforcers have already arrested at least 14 suspects so far in connection with the lynching of a woman in mob beating in Dhaka’s Badda area on last July 20 of this year.
Taslima Begum Renu, 40, was beaten to death mercilessly by a mob in front of North Badda Government Primary School over rumours of being a kidnapper in July.
Confirming the matter to the New Nation on Tuesday, Badda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafikul Islam said that police arrested 14 suspects including the prime suspect Hridoy. Hridoy sent to jail after five days remand as he gave statement before a Dhaka Court confessing his involvement in the incident.
They all were detained after reviewing video footage of the mob beating incident, and the detainees are being interrogated at the moment. Besides, effort is on to arrest others culprits who involved in tragic mob beating OC also said.
Meanwhile, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking its directives on the government to give Tk five crore compensation to the family of Taslima Begum Renu, who was killed in a mob beating in Citys Badda area on July 20.
A Supreme Court lawyer, Advocate Ishrat Hasan, submitted the petition also requesting the HC to order the government to give Tk 10 lakh to
meet emergency necessities Renu’s family in 15 days. Badda Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Abdur Razzak told the New Nation that at the very beginning of the tragic incident there were opposing views regarding the murder of Taslima as she was a divorcee, but we are clear that it was just a mob beating and her husband had no connection with the murder.
Police also arrested a woman in connection with Renu Murder from Misritola of North Badda in Dhaka.
However the High Court (HC) recently asked the authorities concerned to inform it about steps taken against those involved in the incidents of recent mob-beating.
It issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why the defendants’ failure to save the lives of Badda lynching victim Taslima Begum Renu and others should not be declared illegal. The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the rule following a petition.
It asked the Home Secretary and the Inspector General of Police to submit reports on government steps about mass-beating and against those involved in the incidents within November 28.
It is noted that the deceased, Taslima Begum Renu, 40, lived with her daughter in city’s Mohakhali area.
Her nephew, Syed Nasir Uddin Titu, while identifying the victim to the police said: “My aunt [Taslima] was divorced and living with her son. She visited the school to seek information about admissions and they [the mob] killed her. What were the police doing? I want justice.
Later, her nephew Nasir Uddin Tito filed a case against 400 or 500 unknown people with Badda Police Station.
