Xi congratulates Mirza Fakhrul

China has reaffirmed its longstanding friendship with Bangladesh and expressed readiness to deepen strategic cooperation with Dhaka as Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his inauguration as Bangladesh’s president.

Xi sent the congratulatory message on Monday, 24 August, according to a Facebook post by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh.

In the message, Xi described China and Bangladesh as close neighbours with a long history of friendship, noting that the two countries have treated each other as equals since establishing diplomatic relations 51 years ago.

He said the two countries had supported each other on issues concerning their respective core interests and major concerns while pursuing their own paths of modernisation.

“China-Bangladesh bilateral relationship has withstood the test of changing international circumstances,” Xi said.

The Chinese president said he was ready to work with President Mirza Fakhrul to carry forward the traditional friendship between the two countries, strengthen strategic communication and promote high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Xi also expressed his willingness to broaden cooperation and exchanges across various sectors, saying closer engagement would help deepen the China-Bangladesh community with a shared future in the new era.

He said such efforts would bring greater benefits to the peoples of both countries.
The message comes as Bangladesh and China mark more than five decades of diplomatic relations, with Beijing signalling its intention to maintain close engagement with Dhaka and further expand bilateral cooperation across economic, development and other sectors.
