RMG workers block city road demanding arrears

Workers of a readymade garment (RMG) on Thursday blocked a road in Mirpur area of Dhaka for few hours demanding payment of their arrears and Eid bonus.
Workers of Zara Jeans Garment blocked the road and the traffic movement remained suspended for about three hours near the Sony Cinema Hall at Mirpur Section-1 in the capital.
“We are not getting salaries for several months and there is little hope for bonus ahead of the Eid. The authorities are not taking steps to resolve this though we have been protesting from Wednesday night. Now there is no way but to take to the street,” said an agitator.
Sabuj, a worker of the garment factory, said, “The factory is scheduled to be closed today and will open after the Eid. But we are deprived of arrears and bonus. How can we celebrate the Eid without bonus and salary?”
Khairul Amin, Assistant Commissioner (Mirpur Zone) of Mirpur Division, said that traffic movement in front of Sony Cinema hall was halted due to the protest.
We have asked the garment owner and the BGMEA to resolve the crisis as soon as possible, the police official said.
