Major parties absence in UZ polls disappointing: CEC

It is disappointing for the Election Commission that some of the major political parties are not taking part in the upcoming Upazila Election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said on Sunday.
“We have always wanted a participatory and competitive election. So it was disappointing when we came to know they would not take part,” he said at a workshop for Upazila Election officials held at the Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Nurul Huda said, “However, we believe,
even, if the polls are not going to be participatory, that will be competitive.”
The Chief Election Commissioner warned election officials against any duty lapse or irregularity and said. “Strict measures will be taken against the defaulter,” he added.
“You will conduct the election in a neutral manner.”
Nurul Huda said, “There is no scope for your activities to be influenced by any political party. You have no other responsibilities other than those dictated by the Constitution and laws.”
The Chief Election Commissioner said further, “Many times, enthusiastic supporters deliberately commit illegal activities and sometimes do through ignorance. The officers must remain careful about these.”
Acknowledging the importance of polling agents, Nurul Huda told the officers that ” Their security will be ensured at the polling centres.
Party agents too will get security.
Elections will be held in 480 Upazilas in five phases this year – starting from March 10.
The Election Commission has announced that the first, second and third phases of the election will be held on March 10, 18 and 24, respectively.
