Acute noise hampering academic activities at RU

Excessive noise is hampering the academic activities of Rajshahi University (RU). Students cannot concentrate on class lectures, even teachers have to often stop delivering their lectures for some time because of high-decibel noise.
The prime venues for various programs are Shahid Minar, Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium, Senate Bhaban, Deans’ Complex, Meer Mosarrof Hossain Gallery, TSC, and the ground in front of the Central Library, Tukitaki Chattor, Amtola Chattor and Iblish Chattor.
Besides, different programs and schedule are announced with blaring loudspeakers during class and exam time.
For this, the students of first science building, Shahidullah Arts Building, Rabindra Arts Building, Momotazuddin Arts Building, Ismail Hossain Siraji Building are facing excessive noise problem.
Muhammad Wajiullah, a fourth-year student of Accounting and Information Systems said, “Noise pollution is a long terms problem of our university. Sometimes, we cannot concentrate on class lectures because of much noise. University authorities should take necessary steps to solve it”.
RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman said: “Noisy program disturb us. But we’ve no control over such programs held by political parties or some organisations. We had imposed restrictions, but they do not follow our rules.” Noted, on October 19, 2013, the authorities imposed a ban on all types of rallies, processions, political activities and use of megaphones during class hours, exams, and admission tests.
