CPA Port going to expand anchorage boundaries in Bay soon

Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has decided to expand its boundaries in the sea to earn more revenue from anchored ships.
To accommodate more ships, the boundaries would be extended up to 3,500 square kilometers from the existing 31 kilometers under its surveillance, according to the plan.
According to sources, the boundaries of the Chittagong Port will be extended beyond Sitakunda and Mirsarai coast and reach Kutubdia of Cox’s Bazar to Matarbari of Maheshkhali. As a result, ships in the outer anchorage will have to pay the port charges and the entire ship movement will come under CPA monitoring.
The four hundred years old Chattogram Port was recognised as a modern port after independence. In the first phase, it’s working area was only 5 nautical miles.
Later, it has been extended to 31 sq km by dividing the area into three parts, alpha, brave and Charlie. “Under this circumstances, a proposal to extend the boundaries of the port upto Matarbari of Maheshkali has been sent to the shipping ministry.” Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Faruque, told the journalists.
A ship while staying at Chattogram Port pays $ 0.14 per GST as port charge. Every ship is measured to be 800 to 1 thousand GST. But now, several hundred ships stay in the sea from Kutubdia to Maheshkhali, but they do not pay any charge.
If the whole areas come to the port boundaries, the revenue earning by the port will increase many times , observed Prof Saidur Rahman Chowdhury of Marine Science Faculty of Chattogram University.
Currently, around three thousand ships anchor Chattogram Port per year. But the main 16 jetties can accommodate limited number of ships.
A large portion of the designated area is located in the outer anchorage. President of Shipping Agent Association, Ahsanul Haque Chowdhury urged the authority to increase the revenue through brining more ships under its periphery.
A LNG station has been set up in Matarbari area of Maheshkhali, along with the construction site for a power station.
