MAN is mortal. Surely all men will die. But sometimes the sorrows of some deaths are too heavy to bear. It was proved again at Armannagar area in Joypurhat town where eight members, including four children, of a family died in a fire on Wednesday night.
The victims are Dulal Hossain, 71, his wife Momena Begum, 62, their son Abdul Momin, 48, his wife Parina Begum, 38, and their four children — Bristi, 14, twins Hasi, Khushi, 12, and one-and-a-half-year-old Taimul Islam Noor. Of the dead, Bristi was this year’s Junior School Certificate examinee, and the twins were class-VII graders.
Fire Service and Civil Defence officials said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at the tin-roofed house of one Abdul Momin. As the entry gate to the house was locked, none of the family members could come out. After the flame was doused, the firefighters brought out three charred bodies of Momin, Bristi and Momena from the house.
The firefighters rescued five injured by cutting the window grilles and admitted them to Joypurhat Modern Hospital. The doctors referred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit as their condition was critical. But on the way to the DMCH, Parina Begum and her three other children died. Another wounded Dulal succumbed to injuries at DMCH.
Only massive public awareness could stop such type of fire incidents and deaths. The residents will have to be careful about any accidental fire. There were several fire incidents which had occurred due to lose or faulty electrical connection and for using substandard cable or switch. We’re still not aware about the real reason behind the deadly fire.
An investigation committee has been formed to unearth the reason behind the incident. Apart from unveiling the mystery, the probe committee should also give some guidelines to avert this kind of fire in the future.
We are deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of eight persons. We have no word to express our sorrow except extending our heartiest sympathy to the bereaved family members and friends of the victims.
