FOLLOWING the Prime Minister’s repeated promises to scrap the quota system from all government jobs – the government is yet to issue a gazette in this regard. Apparently, it seemed when the outraged PM promised to eliminate quotas that perhaps the gazette would be issued soon, but now it seems her verbal pledge was a temporary measure of conflict resolution. However, there has been no progress regarding the publication of a gazette abolishing the quotas in government jobs, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed it as the deadline set by demonstrators expired the day before yesterday.
The issue remains at the same stage as it had been before. Responding to the deadlock to resolve the issue, demonstrators’ yesterday called for human chains across all universities and colleges beginning from today 11:00am demanding swift gazette publication.
We feel, the government must act promptly or else, anarchy and chaos might hit the overall education sector hard. It has been 27 days since the PM announced abolishment of quota service at the Parliament. The students are frustrated and there is a strong possibility that the stalemate may lead to a prolonged crisis. The inconclusive situation should not be allowed to continue.
At least the government could have given a probable timeframe by when the gazette would be notified. This would have easily averted the tensed situation prevailing among the students right now. So far there complete silence from the government’s end has led many to believe that the PM’s words could be retracted, however, the party in power knows it best.
From our end, we can say, whether the government wants to eliminate quota system or not it is up to them, but we don’t expect to see once more our students being forced to take the streets. They have wasted enough of their valuable time, resources and energy.
And also sufficient analysis, discussion, arguments and counter-arguments on the quota system have taken place – now the government must put an end to it. There is no point in keeping the discontented students without there being a resolution.
