Fish surplus spurs export push

Bangladesh has achieved full self-sufficiency in meeting domestic fish demand, prompting the government to make export expansion its top priority, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said on Tuesday.

The government is now focusing on expanding fish exports after Bangladesh achieved self-sufficiency in meeting domestic demand, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku said.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of National Fisheries Fortnight 2026, organised by the Department of Fisheries at its conference room in Dhaka, according to a press release.

The state minister also highlighted the importance of the country’s haor regions to freshwater fish production, explaining why the central event was held in Katiadi, Kishoreganj, rather than Dhaka.

“The haors account for a major portion of our freshwater fish supply. Hosting the event outside the capital allowed us to connect directly with marginal fish farmers, fishers and local stakeholders,” he said.

Tuku said former president Ziaur Rahman had initiated important programmes, including river dredging and canal excavation, while former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia had expanded development initiatives.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was continuing to support agriculture and fisheries by approving new sector-specific projects aimed at strengthening the rural economy.

The state minister also called on public servants to perform their duties with transparency and dedication.

“Power belongs to the people. Public servants must fulfil their obligations without negligence and work transparently for public welfare,” he said.

Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md Delwar Hossain, speaking as a special guest, instructed officials to ensure hassle-free delivery of public services.

“Fish farmers and citizens must not face harassment when seeking government services. Any negligence in official duties will be met with strict accountability,” he warned.

Department of Fisheries Director General Dr Md Khaled Kanak, who chaired the event, said the central National Fisheries Fortnight event had last been held outside Dhaka in 2003.

He said holding this year’s main event in Katiadi, Kishoreganj, and honouring field-level farmers had renewed enthusiasm across the fisheries sector.

Senior ministry officials, sector representatives and local fish farmers attended the closing ceremony.
